science fiction shifted from their early deep territories of house to the current broken beats of electro, keeping the characteristic classic analogue warmth. this ep is made by various artists, and it comes under the signature of an obsessive majestic presence of the 808 beat, that sounds like an accidental tribute to the creator of this drum machine, founder of roland corporation, that has died on april the 1st as a fool that changed the way to make music since early 80es. tracks are mostly sustained, from synched sequences of hinode to the final atmospheric obscure modular landscapes of exterminador, chromed by ngly distortions in track 02. dj nephil on the b side introduces a solid visionary chicagesque mellow atmosphere.

since its release last year, the grammy nominated album louie vega starring…xxviii has reached unfathomable heights, after 8 single vinyl releases and two full triple set album releases, we still have one more up our sleeve. today, here we are in the third and final installment of the louie vega starring…xxviii vinyl album release series, this time taking it to another level with unreleased and lost mixes. when making an album there are usually way more than the number of songs allocated for the project. in this case there were over 50 songs and tracks created for the louie vega starring…xxviii album. vega has selected 14 unreleased and lost tracks from the recordings and put together dj friendly versions with these super talented artists involved: funkadelic, nick monaco & soul clap, kenny bobien, cindy mizelle, maphorisa, berita, wanda baloyi & kabomo (south african top talent), roberto roena (of the fania all stars), brutha basil, jesse jackson (blues rock artist), sara devine, luis salinas (argentinean guitarist), duane harden (song/hitmaker), & 3 winans brothers featuring the clark sisters. the packaging is lovely with an open gatefold huge picture of a mural painted by none other than richard wilson uk artist. mastering by the great walter coelho, for sonic perfection & pressing manufactured by optimal in germany.

the album attains a unique harmony while drawing from a myriad of beliefs and practices. syncretism appears not only in the name but in the artwork and the music itself. the independent tonal passages draw on aspects of varied genres while creating a remarkably coherent yet homogeneous work. lvis mejía explores in his second album, topics of the christian religion and the history of man. deftly placed style and tempo contrasts express the various antagonisms found in this discourse. with the use of contemporary music in combination with hints of jazz, mejía designs spherical soundscapes, therefore allowing for musical deformations, hence the title aforma. the result is an experience that evokes abstract musical impressions. a reference to christianity is also embedded in the track order as the first piece patefactio opens the musical event much like a christian mass. the travel proceeds through the lurking clerical chants of aeternus-the final trial, whilst the bells are then calling us to mass with the track in dissonata apocalypse and continuing with the ontological concept of belief in in ghost we trust. everything comes full circle with the history of homo errata as a conglomerate of human errors. this final piece serves also as a link to the second part of the album anthropology of amnesia a musical description of repression and forgetting as a condition of life, which has emerged as a theme of human existence since the beginning of recorded history. with this opening piece artist and musician lvis mejía has created a magical musical experience, leaving us eager for its sequel.

non worldwide co-founder chino amobi makes his vinyl debut with the soundtrack to choreographer ligia lewis’ minor matter, a performance piece that deftly articulates an argument for minoritarian politics. most of the material is newly commissioned but one of the tracks, ‘locus of control’, is lifted from amobi’s provocative airport music for queer black and brown folk album, in which he follows brian eno in inducing the atmosphere of an airport terminal. but through the eyes of a black man and with 2016 realism, it’s a different story, where eno invites lullaby, chino unshackles nightmare

british artist gazelle twin presents her new audio visual performance show for two vocalists, kingdom come . three tracks from the av show, created in collaboration with video directors chris turner and tash tung, are now available on limited edition vinyl via the vinyl factory. artwork by jonathan barnbrook. the conceptual performance for two vocalists is staged in six chapters, incorporating electronics, film, and the brand new soundtrack from gazelle twin, created from samples and live vocal manipulation. with the piece set on treadmills against a manic, illusory landscape, kingdom come places heightening physical demands on the performers, resulting in an exhausting, otherworldly climax. taking its title from j. g ballard’s final novel, kingdom come will play with notions of feralness, displacement and the uncanny in the contemporary british, urban landscape. the artwork for the ep has been designed by jonathan barnbrook whom has used the track and a.v video for metro as his inspiration. jonathan recently featured in the new design museum exhibition, designs of the year , with jonathan s design for david bowie s blackstar album.

second release from the label offers up broken rhythms, jacking grooves and deep spirituals. hold me explores lyricism within tight repetitious rhythm, on which saxophonist tyrone isaac-stuart explores hook lines and story telling whilst bassist jordan christo maintains control over the low-end spectrum. that he man of hers melds jacking, upbeat tempo with romanticism and melancholy on top, with louis ktisti providing guitar accompaniment. one s own permanent faith, on the other hand, provides for a moodier and more subdued spiritual dance rhythm, which warms one up before the spiritual explorations in would you tell me about you. in this final track, the guitar rhythms provided by jabriel alsuhaimi and spiritual exorcism of the saxophone by tyrone isaac-stuart present a different angle in the approach towards discovering the endless groove.

daywalker & cf follow-up 2015 s shimmer and supersonic transport with more cosmic synth noodling and a club ready tune on bank records. entro senestre and willie burns always manage to hold together musical continuity while aimlessly jamming in burns smoky studio. it is their forte. with that being said, their style is not genre specific. one thing is for sure, the music is going to be trippy and synth driven. the title track wave force is a driving dance track built for big rooms, reminiscent of supersonic transport. the b-side features the producers implementing freaky synth lines and spacey sound effects on rhythm wolf. the final track, between worlds is somber. the track welcomes the occasional misplayed note along with sappy synth riffs. another solid release by daywalker & cf. cover photo by florian kupfer.

picking up right where ep 1 left off, ep 2 kicks things off with a bang. first up is catz n dogz and yotam avnis for blakkat a high pace burner ideally suited for dance floors from panorama bar to under the leds of watergate and every club in-between. the duo return with the bright version of afterglow for the second cut on ep 2 and aptly titled, it pushes an intense, glitter filled ride to its limits. embarking onto the b-side, o.a. peas from heavy hitter eats everything & lord leopard take a trip down memory lane with a heavily sample based feel good tune that will absolutely demolish dance floors worldwide. rounding out the ep is a final collaboration between catz n dogz and reno wurzbacher with ma people and its by far the smoothest and most laid back tune of the bundle, but never does it let you rest as a mesmerizing groove and lush atmospherics tell a deep, complex tale of late nights and early mornings.

mysterious berlin based label mask preps its debut release titled ‘lemmy’ with four untitled cuts this april. a new series born out of an established german imprint, mask’s enigmatic debut release was produced using a selection of analogue gear including a moog slim phatty, e-mu sp-1200 and nord rack 2x. the a side begins with a track built around a tightly programmed drum loop which subtly builds, laced with mix-slicing hats and sub-low kicks whilst stretched out chords dissipate around a crunchy synth lead. the second production is twisted and dusty, using flanging and reverberated effects to lead towards a distorted breakdown, driven from the depths by gusts of full bodied snares and a growling sub line. on the flip, dulcet tones of a female vocalist join lush melodic chords to cleanse the palette, whilst working within the confines of a subdued yet crisp drum machine groove. the final track then strips things back even further, employing minimalist percussive hits and a warm bass lead, leaving space for its soothing female vocals to do the talking

one of the core members of the apollonia family is the mastermind behind the label’s latest release. shonky steps up with his first solo ep since ‘plombiére’ which dropped in july 2016. full of funky flavours and that distinct ‘shonky style’, the new ep consists of four brand new tracks produced exclusively for apollonia. each track emanates its own unique vibe, while reppin’ shonk’s irresistible groove. on side a we have ‘tyrolien’, a jaunty number with bright tones and a tight, rolling groove. shonky injects it with a series of unusual fx and what sounds like an wizened old creature, speaking about ‘the foulest stench in the air’. it’s a superb combination and sets the ep off to a great start.next up is ‘beat street’ which has a heavier set of beats, which stomp down as a marauding b-line gets to work. tiny fizzes and cheeps in the background add depth, sounding like robotic birds at play in the wild. the track is minimal in its make up, but deep and engrossing, classic shonky material.flip the vinyl over and we have ‘torro rosso’, a bold, stomping workout with fresh percussion and a jovial analogue riff. as the bubbly low end percolates way down below, the beats pump the track along and an extra layer of analogue funk enters the fray midway through. the final track is titled ‘serpent a&#768,,, sonnette’ and swithes the vibe. it’s loose, meandering and twisted, with a hypnotic bassline and super sharp percussion. this one is going to get the dance floor locked into a groove, as it progresses a sweet, chirpy melody brightens the mood. feel the glow!once again shonky demonstrates his ability to produce groovy dance floor cuts that have their own unique fingerprint, danceable, unusual and utterly captivating. grab the new ep now!

coming off of ep releases on dynamic reflection and 100% pure, uun returns to his label ego death for it’s third release, and it’s first on vinyl. the title track references carl sagan’s classic work of skepticism demon haunted world. it features a percussive attack that builds into a swirling tornado of distorted synths and hihats. the scarlet martyr takes a different approach that is heavy on pads and atmospheric elements all over a bed of field recordings. the b side starts with nx1’s remix of the title track. this interpretation chops up the synth and percussive elements into a broken beat onslaught that builds into the track being deconstructed piece by piece. the final track dominions continues in the broken beat direction with a more straightforward dancefloor approach

almost 10 years have passed since onra arrived with the charmingly eccentric chinoiseries lp. 32 hip-hop beats formed the sample-based project - dusty chinese vinyl hissing and crackling throughout – resulting in an intriguing and spontaneous mix of the producers interest in exploring a newly-discovered style of music with his love for classic hip-hop production.
using the style of analogue mpc production combined with the somewhat restrictive record sampling of strictly chinese music records, he has been able to be creative over three volumes, an amount of 100 instrumentals, despite the challenge of finding more obviously standout samples in chinese music.
the chinoiseries projects are the type of albums that invites the listener to play it from beginning to end, in order to really enjoy the trip and appreciate the variety of rhythms and textures spread over those 32 short instrumentals. in that way, “pt.3” is no different to its predecessors, but the originality of the samples, the curious harmonies and the odd-drum patterns still makes the album sounds as fresh as the first one.
onra finishes this epic trilogy with class as a result of extended record digging across the far east and the producer s own development over the preceding 10 years.
as a producer who has released records inspired by 80’s funk, 90’s hip-hop and r’n’b, electronic and even a spiritual jazz project, “pt. 3” brings this stylised set to a close.

ltd repress , for our final record of the year, we turn to glasgow’s man of the year - denis sulta. like a good chunk of the numbers family, he has earnt his stripes working at the coalface of techno aka rubadub. he has crafted two excellent twelves for our bare-chested cousins at dixon avenue basement jams and is beginning to carve himself out a reputation as a dj of some repute, expertly blending in the bangers with sulta-certified weirdness. denis is part of a new wave of glaswegian artists who are doing amazing things and whose music is continuously exciting us. ‘it’s only real’ created by sulta during a burst of inspiration one sunday, takes us back to a time when techno was intricately melodic but still kicked hard in the club. made with only the purest of intentions and a dedication to the art of moving heads and feet. support from four tet, john talabot, joy orbison, kowton and loads more quality djs.

snow-white vinyl. solace is the brand new roller from alaska. a sequence of sad violin loops set the tone over fast breaks and strings. sub-bass and keys glide with soulful house vocals adding the final touch for the first solo alaska 12inch in three years. alaska revisits the ambient number earthloop on the flipside adding sharp downtempo drums to the original break-less recording from 2010’s the mesozoic era lp.

redshape returns to his own label with a retrovisionist release that looks back in time as much as it looks forward to the future. revving up on the a side is shift, a propulsive hurtle to the final frontiers. starting off ominously with just drums, bass and a pollock splatter of toms, the track is soon overrun by an army of relentlessly running basslines, let loose to steer in and out like searching headlights on a dark and endless highway. with a heavier kick, the track shifts into top gear with pensive pads soaring overhead, mesmerising squeaks and his signature attention to percussive detail. on the flip is drive, which switches gears down a notch as an astrospace cruise along intergalactic coastlines - from summery california to shiny coruscant. a rounded pounding beat with heavy sub bass bounces along to a breezy tropical melody and spacious percussive work, before riding off into a cinematic sunset that is as nostalgic as it is hopeful of the c oming dawn. once again on the edge of spatial sound but grounded in analog warmth, redshape has presented a revision of classic record productions that truly punches as it is meant to be felt and heard - on wax. recommended!

luciano nitri has been locked away working on his debut album for horizons music. the sampler is a glimpse of what is to come, with 3 shining vocal tracks, each have the power to be the lead track in their own right. ‘circles’ is funk infused bassline, coupled with lucy kitchen’s haunting vocal this track is the perfect tease and intro for the album. visonobi takes no prisoners, with his heavyweight vocals laid on a sparse nitri beat. ‘homage’ is the calling card to throw some darkness on this single. the final track shows nitri’s liquid flex, soft vocals the track takes us on a journey, and yes this journey for nitri has just begun. circles the album is out soon!

almost 10 years have passed since onra arrived with the charmingly eccentric chinoiseries lp. 32 hip-hop beats formed the sample-based project dusty chinese vinyl hissing and crackling throughout resulting in an intriguing and spontaneous mix of the producers interest in exploring a newly-discovered style of music with his love for classic hip-hop production. using the style of analogue mpc production combined with the somewhat restrictive record sampling of strictly chinese music records, he has been able to be creative over three volumes, an amount of 100 instrumentals, despite the challenge of finding more obviously standout samples in chinese music. the chinoiseries projects are the type of albums that invites the listener to play it from beginning to end, in order to really enjoy the trip and appreciate the variety of rhythms and textures spread over those 32 short instrumentals. in that way, pt.3 is no different to its predecessors, but the originality of the samples, the curious harmonies and the odd-drum patterns still makes the album sounds as fresh as the first one. onra finishes this epic trilogy with class as a result of extended record digging across the far east and the producer s own development over the preceding 10 years.

bunkr enslave dust-coated synthesizers, dilapidated drum machines and rusty fx boxes to craft 4/4 tunes for their impatient overlords. their vision is clear they will make techno, they will make house, they will make electronica, and you will listen and dance. its not yet clear if bunkr is the work of one frenzied human or many lazy individuals but we do know one thing - the ringleader is one james dean, who previously released as lost idol on labels such as pork recordings, nature, final frontier and cookshop. following a prolonged spell of writing music at slow tempos, dean initiated bunkr as a reactionary desire to speed things up. too much time had been spent just sitting around - it was time to stop sitting and start dancing. true to their vision, here we have cloud chaser, a bubbling jam backed with a huge remix from shan, who flips the mix with dramatic strings, sprinkles of magic dust and massive amen breaks. no less impressive is junos revenge, a track youd turn up on your headphones while taking a nice afternoon stroll on the moon, on a sunny morning after a long interplanetary rave. igor tipura delivers the rework, complete with a marching percussion workout and acid chemtrails that will send you right back to 1993.

the fourteenth effort in the attic music series is a full ep by roman artist cristiano balducci under his black catcher alias. gossip is a firm and futuristic sounding bundle of modern day techno which spans 3 tracks.
on the a-side we find the title track gossip which is a scorching haul of tough drum sounds and hypnotizing arp sounds that build throughout.
the opening track on the b side is a remix of the track by cristiano balducci himself of more acidic proportions.
the final cut on this 12 is the original into the void, which showcases a deeper side of black catcher. this track is built around a misty atmosphere and soaring synth patches.

ever reliable canadian producer fred everything makes his first appearance of 2017 with a selection of choice remixes of house classics for the lazy days label. on the a-side he s taking to crazy p s -like a fool- a vocal and dub version and laying down a slick, bubbling groover that fits perfectly with the original s warm, disco-infused elements. on the flip, he takes on roach motel s -the night- and makes it into a shimmering nocturnal cut peppered with impeccable synth lines and a sleazy vocal turn. by way of variety the final track sees fred create a laid back balearic, auto-tuned version of franky selector s -wind swept dune-.

with its third release, atipic records introduces us to andu simion’s musical universe. a house journey bearing different twists, presented in 4 episodes chained at an almost imperceptible layer.
take the opening track as a strong example: it gives you that dreamy feeling of rediscovering the undiluted beauty of old skool deep house. the same kaleidoscopic groove floods your senses in a2, lighthearted, echoing deep into our souls.
flip the record for the bassline to come into play, deeply textured into the melodic waves of b1. the final track completes the ep with its detroit flavour, stripped just enough to make it a perfect match for the nowadays dancefloors.

i-lp-o in dub is the solo project of pan sonic member ilpo väisänen. capital dub chapter 1 follows the 2015 debut communist dub - a year marked by further descent into economic crisis and instability. the usual business cycles of production / distribution / consumption running alongside macro cycles of boom and bust have been replaced by ossification, austerity, the machine seizing up.
ilpo’s “circular riddims” complement the ebb and flow of the circulation of money + commodities and are mirrored by his field recordings of barcelona rain – the final phase of the cyclical movement of water. but of course the smooth running of “paradise capital” is unsustainable. destroyed techno and open spaces contend with sinister swarming atmospheres. a cash machine flickers. zeros and ones displace another factory. dub as decay – the ghostly remains of tracks eroded by time and technology. the “invisible hand” of the market spasms with tremors.
ferocious textural feedback as music for stock exchange crashes. the soundtrack to heaps of money hoarded by the hidden class. capital is value in motion, but there is nowhere to go. after the collapse, picturesque ruins. capital dub chapter 1 simply asks the question: what next?

brooklyn musician and red bull music academy alum sam posner created el niño & the southern oscillations as a meditation on the the beauty and power of the ocean. the tracks flow through timeless electronica influenced by selected ambient era aphex twin and early larry heard as well as contemporary artists like carribou and jamie xx. posner sketched the framework and palate for the project over a few years of travel, bringing the final ep together in a sea-side cabin watching waves crash against the rocky maine coast.
